Obverse: An Alsatian dog facing right and wearing a carryall jacket with canteen and first aid supplies. Perimeter inscription; "Erstmalige verwendung der Sanitætshunde weltkrieg 1914" ( First use of Red Cross dogs in World War 1914.)

Reverse: In the battle-field two medics carry a wounded soldier off to the left. A broken barbed-wire fence disappears into the horizon and bank of clouds. Center, front is a cross with a German helmet to the left and a broken rifle and canteen to the right. K-G in exergue. The inscription reads; "In Dienst der Menschheit" (In the Service of Humanity).
