CHRONOLOGICAL LIFE PATH

 

1875

Karl Goetz born 28 June in Augsburg, third of five children.

1881

Father dies of diptheria contracted from two daughters who had died eight days earlier.

1889

Apprenticeship for four years with the Master engraver Johannes Dominal in Augsburg.

1892

Passes journeyman examination at the age of 17.  Wins First Prize from the City of Augsburg for his design and execution of two engraved tin plates. 

1893

He finishes his apprenticship on January 31, 1893 and decides to stay on with Dominal until June 26,1895.

1895

On June 27th Goetz begins his "Wanderjahre" and moves to Dresden where he begins work with Cohne & Northman.  Moves to Leipzig in October and works for the Kuntze Company.

1896

Off to Berlin where he works with Wahl on Oranien Street.  Moves to Düsseldorf to work with Schnurle.

1898

             Moves to Utrecht, Holland where he works for Koninklijke Begeer.

1899

Off to Le Locle, Switzerland to work with Huguenin Fréres.  In the autumn of 1899 Karl moves to Paris to first begin work with Firmin Lassére, later with E. Philippe.

1904

Karl moves to Munich.

1906

Wins prize in the Nuremburg medal exhibit.

1908

Grandmother dies on March 1st.  She was Karl's surrogate parent from his 6th birthday until the age of 17 after his father and two sisters died of diptheria. On October 1 Karl moves into his home and studio at Isabella Strasse 26.

1912

Becomes a member of the Munich Artists Association (Münchner Künstler genossenschaft).

1912

Marries Margarete StanglTheir son Guido is born on October 18th.

1913

Wins Silver State medal at the International Universal Exhibition of Ghent 

1914

Wins First Prize medal in design competition for his National Aviation Donation medal.

1914

Begins creation of World War I series of satirical medals which total 175 by the year 1923.

1916

Daughter Gertraud born on April 22nd.

1916

Karl is drafted into military service on June 6th.

1919

Mother dies on March 11th.

1920

Daughter Brunhilde born on February 18th.

1924

Wins First Prize in competition for award medal design "For Loyalty in Work" for the five Saxon Chambers of Commerce.

1928

Moves to Dall'Armi Strasse 16 on October 1st.

1931

Wins competition for Hindenburg postage stamp design held by the German Post Office.

1937

Exhibits eight bronze medals in the House of German Art in Munich.

1943

Exhibits in Vienna at show of the German Medallic Art.

1944

Herig medal, K-603, accepted for exhibit in the House of German Art in Munich.

1950

Dies in Munich on September 8th.  Buried in Westfriedhof.

1951

Posthumous Silver Medal Award at the "II Exposición Nacional de Numismatica e Internacional de Medallas" held in Madrid, Spain.
